Book ahead of time, especially in peak season, since automatic transmissions and larger vehicles go first outside North America. At the counter, have your passport, your home license, your IDP (digital or printed), and the card used for booking ready to go.
Insurance catches more travelers off guard than anything else in the rental process. Base rates abroad often include only minimal liability coverage, with damage waivers sold separately. Check what your existing auto policy or card benefits already cover before you land.
Walk the car with staff before you drive off and photograph any damage that's already there. Ask directly about fuel policy, toll handling, and drop-off fees, since these differ more by country than almost anything else.
